“Why,” my most frequented word.
More than a, an, or the.
More than any article or farewell.
More than any greeting,
More than a yes or a no,
More than okay, all right, or cool,
Although I do enjoy a
Strategic and sarcastic “okay”
Punctuating a statement I do not believe.
But recreational argumentation
Is my favorite pastime
Because everything can be argued.
Everything should be argued,
Because without conflict,
How can one be sure of their opinions?
Some of the best conversations
Start with an opinion
And end with a why.
One time he said,
“I would think less of you
If you really did that”
I said, “Why?”
And he got pissed.
Although more frustrated than mad.
So I said the best response I know,
Other than a simple why:
“How mad are you right now?”
And he asked the validity of my questioning,
And I asked the depths of his opinion,
And he said ‘because,’ and I say ‘okay.’
That small word, just four letters, or two
Depending on the medium,
Is enough to throw someone into rage.
Someone once asked me,
‘Why do you always pick fights?’
And I said that it is fun.
And she said “Why?”
I looked deeply into her eyes,
She was using my argument, and I smiled.
I turned the question on her,
And she understood then:
Everyone’s opinion should be rooted.
Once somebody hung up their phone,
I was arguing to myself.
I threw their absent voice at the wall.
Nothing can make me angrier
Than somebody not listening to
My opinion or argument of their belief.
But I was talking about ‘why’
And the many times it helped me
And the countless times it helped others.
With just one question,
I have made one believe in God
And another not believe anymore.
But faith is difficult to argue,
Because it is such a blind belief
Which is rarely questioned.
People become uncomfortable,
Some people walk away,
And others tell me I will burn.
But if there is a hell,
I would take it to be a place
Where nothing is questioned.
Everything is taken as stated,
And nobody cares about what
They really think. So I argue.

And that is how I found it.
That place of fire and brimstone.
On my TV. Every day.
(Six and eleven.)
